Week 03

Wednesday - Markup vs. Programming Languages

When people talk about computer coding, they imagine computer programming; that is, writing code that will instruct a computer to do work and produce some kind of output. HTML is not, properly speaking, a programming language. It doesn't instruct a computer to perform work. Instead, it merely organizes and styles content (through CSS), and in that regard is little different from a word processor like Microsoft Word or Google Docs.

Thus, although this is a computer science class and a computer coding class, it is not a computer programming class. I encourage everyone here to attempt to learn some programming on your own, but we will not be covering programming in this class, as we will have our hands full just with HTML and CSS.

Today I'd like you to attempt to finish this week's coding challenge, referenced at the bottom of this page.

Upon completing the coding challenge, I'd like you to spend some time working on your typing speed by playing a simple keyboarding game.

As a side note, yesterday I spoke with you about the lack of diversity in the tech industry, with an emphasis on a lack of gender diversity. There's an informative Website you should check out to extend your knowledge on this topic.
