U.05 Load Management (knots)

Day 02 - Bowline Hitch

Today we're going to work on the bowline hitch. As I mentioned yesterday (and as your notes should reflect), the bowline hitch is a knot that gives us a static bight at the end of a rope. It is useful for rescue operations because it can be tied around a person and the loop will not tighten on the person when tension is applied to the rope. Because of its applicability in emergencies, I encourage you to learn how to tie the bowline with one hand - though I will teach you the two-handed method and you are free to use both hands on the test.

We'll start class by tying yesterday's knot - the Alpine butterfly loop - in unison, to determine whether we actually learned it yesterday. Then we'll take a quick, open-note quiz on all 5 knots that we need to learn in this unit. After that I'll teach you how to tie the bowline hitch and you'll spend the bell practicing that and reinforcing your muscle memory on the Alpine butterfly loop. Make sure that you can also explain the uses of each knot as you go!
