Day 19 - Competition Day
It's do or die time, teams. Put the finishing touches on your hydraulic arm and let's see which team built the best one!
Note that once you clamp the arm down onto the test environment you are no longer permitted to touch the arm directly until after it completes its test. You can only operate the syringes - the hydraulics - to make everything happen. Record the results, including which team opposed you on the table and how they did. Be specific about how you were able to achieve what you did (and explain any of the 5 cups that your prototype did not put in your bin during the test) and document all those details in the EDP.
Hydraulic calculations
- calculate the area of a circle (Acircle = πr2).
- calcuate the mechanical advantage of a system (M.A. = Fout/Fin)
- know that in general, output distance traveled must be multiplied by M.A. of the system to know input distance traveled
- calculate the volume of a cylinder (Vcylinder = πr2h)
- calculate the radius of a circle given its diameter (r = d/2, or d = 2r)
- know that in general, M.A. = Fout/Fin = Aout/Ain = Δhin/Δhout
- hydraulics
- the branch of engineering concerned with the conveyance of liquids through pipes and channels, especially as a source of mechanical force or control.
