Unit 04 - Pneumatics
Pneumatics is a subfield of mechanical engineering that makes use of air to do work. If you've ever been to an auto shop and seen them connect a hose instead of a power cord to a tool (like an impact wrench), odds are good you were seeing a pneumatic tool, connected to an air compressor.
By compressing air, engineers can channel force through pipes or tubes in a system. Air's compressibility as a gas makes it less powerful than liquid fluids (hydraulics), but leaks tend to be less messy and the entire system tends to have a litle more give to it. Both systems tend to generate a lot of heat and noise.
