U.12 Sustainability & Housing

Day 07 - Refine EDP Requirements

PROBLEM: In addition to being expensive, full-size houses waste energy (heating and cooling large volume of air), waste building materials, waste available land, and waste time (cleaning and maintaining). Waste of this scale is expensive, preventing many people from affording homes altogether and forcing others to work multiple jobs and long hours to pay bills, then compounding that effort by needing to spend more of their shortened free time cleaning and maintaining their homes.

WHO: Society, especially single people and couples who lack the wealth to own full-sized homes.
WHAT: Affordable housing that does not waste resources.
WHY: To reduce waste: of energy, building materials, land, and time.

REQUIREMENTS: [use the requirements you derived yesterday after brainstorming and leveraging your research into the tiny house movement; compare your requirements list against the problem as defined above - make sure ANYTHING passing your requirements will also solve the problem]

CONSTRAINTS: House cannot exceed 400 square feet of floorspace, total cost of materials less than $30,000 including appliances and furniture. (If you are not intentionally working within a budget, simply explain why you are building tiny and you can ignore this constraint of $30,000.)
