Day 08 - Saponification
Today we're going to reinforce our understanding of the chemistry behind soap production by reviewing the saponification process. Go to Online Labs to walk through the process.
We're also going to review the factor-label problems I gave you in the previous lesson and then I'll need you to research superfatting and develop a good soap recipe for production. NOTE: we have a QUIZ tomorrow on lye safety and saponification. You need to know:
- proper lab safety gear to wear when handling lye
- whether lye is an acid, a base, or neutral
- what to do if lye gets on your skin
- what is the exothermic reaction we will have in this activity (reagents and products)
- roughly how hot the exothermic reaction is likely to get
- the chemical formula of lye
- what to do right after removing safety gear
